Walter Lee Broadus Verhine, known by most as "Pete", 81, of White, Georgia, departed this life on Wednesday evening, November 22, 2017 at the Cartersville Medical Center with his loving family by his side.
Pete was born April 4, 1936 in Marietta, Georgia. He was a son of the late Roy Lee and Bertha Mae Atkins Verhine. Along with his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Ponders Verhine who passed away January 4, 2008; his daughters and son-in-law, Debra "Debbie" and Horace Norrell and Kathy Weeks; brothers, Edward and J.W. Verhine; and his sisters, Lillie Burnett, Janie Woodruff, and Carol Mohn; and a very special friend, Michael Finley.
On August 6, 1955, when Pete was 19 years he married Geraldine Ponders. They were united in marriage in Walker County, Georgia, by the Reverend Herman O. Bowman at 12:05 A.M. early one Sunday morning. Pete's wife once said, "We had only saw one another two times, and the third time, we got married and in August 2007 had celebrated 52 years together." Geraldine was a housewife and was a member along with Pete at the Miller's Chapel Full Gospel Church in White, Georgia.
Pete was a veteran having faithfully served as a Sergeant in The United States Army from April 22, 1953 until his honorable discharge on April 20, 1956. On March 31, 1997 he retired from The Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in Marietta, Gerogia.. He was a member of The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers for over 50 years. Prior to moving to White, Georgia, where he built his own home in 1979, he lived in Acworth, Georgia, where he was a previous member of the Blue Springs Baptist Church.
After Geraldine's passing in 2008, Pete met Rachel Finley of Fairmount, Georgia. Rachel's husband had also passed away. For over 10 years Pete and Rachel shared their lives with each other providing companionship and comfort for one another. They were very close to one another. They loved to be together whether it be at home, or traveling, as they were known to do very often together. Rachel was right by Pete's side as he passed from this earth to his heavenly home.
Along with Rachel Finley of Fairmount, Georgia, Pete is also survived by his son, Walter Lee Broadus Jr. of White, Georgia; his daughters, Pebbles and Doug Nichols of Rydal, Georgia, and Ven Verhine of White, Georgia; sister, Ven Padgett;
A Service to celebrate the life of Pete Verhine will be held on November 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Millers Chapel Full Gospel Church in White, Georgia with Reverend Josh James officiating. Music will be provided by The Bartow Goldentones.
Pete will be laid to rest alongside his wife, Geraldine, in the Millers Chapel Full Gospel Church cemetery.
His grandsons and granddaughter, Albert Weeks, Ryan Verhine, Elijah Weeks, Christopher Verhine, Joshua Verhine, and Roxiemae Weeks will serve as pallbearers.
