Mr. Verlin Eugene "Gene" Chance, age 76, departed this life Wednesday morning, February 27, 2019, one day shy of his 77th birthday, at the local hospital surrounded by his loving family. Gene was born in Dalton, Georgia, a son of the late Glenn Nichols and Mary Belle Joiner Chance. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Ethel Gibson, Edna Deverell, Pauline Goins and Glennie Flood, and his brothers, Leonard Chance and J.B. Chance.
Gene was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Airforce and was a retired from the Dalton Fire Department where he was an engineer.
Gene is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Rebecca Defore Chance of the residence; son, Glenn Chance of Dalton, GA; grandchildren, Brittany and Shawn Veach and Ethan Chance; nephews and nieces, Jack and Beverly Gibson, Billy and Martha Gibson, Jimmy and Sherry Gibson, Joan Flood, Mack Jr. and April Flood, Agnes McCulley, Melba and Tommy Harris and Mary Caylor, Paul and Jolly Goins, Mike and Pam Chance, Sue Floyd, Brenda and David Creekmore, Steve Chance, Bobby Chance, Anita Chance; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gary Defore, David Defore, Betty and Richard Mathis, JoAnn and Terry Goble, Florence and Jerry Miller and Gladys Howard, Phyliss Defore, Debbie Defore; several other nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Verlin Eugene "Gene" Chance will be held Saturday morning, March 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Ponders Melrose Chapel with Bruce Satterfield and Larry Warren officiating. He will be laid to rest at West Hill Cemetery with Anthony Hughes, Earl Boyd, Chris Cantrell, Roger McCurdy, Randy Hammontree, Ernie Verhine and Dennis Green will serving as pallbearers. Military graveside honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #112 and Fireman's graveside honors will be provided by the Dalton Fire Department.
The family will receive friends at Ponders Melrose Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday and after 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning until the service hour.
