Mrs. "Velma" Earline Higgins, 78, of the Carbondale Community, departed this life on Friday, November 23, 2018 at Quinton Memorial Health Care Center in Dalton, Georgia.

Velma was born on April 20,1940 in Dalton, Georgia.  She was a daughter of the late Fred S. Burchfield and Christine Dorothy Dixon Broome.  Along with her parents she was also preceded in  death by her beloved husband, John Henry Higgins, who passed away on September 19, 2012; step-father, Charles Ivin Broome; She was also preceded in death by a sister, Neva May Burchfield; brothers, C.D. Broome, Tommy Dixon, and Henry Burchfield; brothers-in-law, Ray Young, and James Ellis.

Velma was a member of the graduating class of Dalton High School in 1958.

Mrs. Higgins is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Vilinda Rebecca and Ricky Petty; step-mother, Vilinda Burchfield of Dalton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Martha and Tom Jones of London, KY, Jo Young of Kentucky, and Mary Ellis of Dalton, GA; grandchildren, Rebecca and Anthony Overby, Timothy Singleton, Emily and Matthew Dempsey; great-grandchildren, Hailie Dempsey, Elizabeth Dempsey, and Jamison Dempsey; several other family members and friends also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Velma Higgins will be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. from Ponders Calhoun Chapel with Brother Clyde McEntyre officiating.  Velma will be laid to rest at the Fairview Cemetery at Hall Memorial Baptist Church.  Destin Corbin, Mark Priest, Jason Dixon, Jimmy Black Jr., Michael Burchfield and Chris Burchfield will  be honored to serve as pallbearers.

Friends may visit with Velma's family on Monday, November 26, 2018 between the hours of 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. at the Ponders Calhoun Chapel and on Tuesday after 9:00 A.M. until the service hour.
