Mr. Thomas Mitchell "Tom" Coker, age 76, of Crandall, Georgia, departed this life Thursday, November 16, 2023 at the Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton, Georgia.
Tom was born June 14, 1947 in Ringgold, Georgia, a son of the late William Horace and Katherine Louise Bagby Coker. He was also preceded death by brothers, George William "Bill" Coker and Charles Coker, sisters, Mary Lane, Julia Tinsley and Kathryn Rollins, brothers-in-law, Robert Williams, Jr., Jerry Fielden and Randy Mashburn.
Tom was a 1965 graduate of North Whitfield High School and received his Electrician degree from Cleveland State College. Tom proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He worked as an electrician at Duracell Battery in Cleveland, Tennessee, for over thirty-five years. He was a member of the Dalton American Legion Post #112. Tom was a member of the Sumach Masonic Lodge #55, member of the Dalton Shrine Club, he was a past president of the Coosawattee Shrine Club in Ellijay, GA, member of the Chatsworth Shrine Club and member of The Yarrab Shriners Temple in Atlanta, GA;
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lynn Williams Coker, and would have celebrated their thirty-seventh wedding anniversary on November 27, 2023; son and daughter-in-law, Mitchell Coker and Tabitha Dudley and their children, Carson Coker, Adeline Coker, Xander Dudley and Layne Forrester all of Crandall GA; daughter and son-in-law, Candace Michelle and Marlon Johnson and their son, Reylunde Johnson all of Cleveland, TN; guardianship sons, Matthew Staccato of Crandall, GA, Scottie Quarles of Dalton, GA; sister and brothers-in-law, Ann and Sonny Groves of Cohutta, GA, Roy Rollins and Glenn Tinsley both of Cleveland, TN; sister-in-law, Tina Coker of Napa, CA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth Fielden of Ringgold, Ga, Kathy Mashburn and Lee Parsons of Dalton, GA, Melinda Williams and Monty Harmon of Chatsworth, Ga, Karen and Frank England of Crandall, Ga and Donna and Brian Mashburn of Dalton, Ga; several special nieces, nephews, great-nieces great-nephews and other family members.
Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Thomas Mitchell "Tom" Coker will be held Tuesday morning, November 21, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. from the Ponders Melrose Chapel with Reverend Craig Glover, Reverend Shane Beck and Reverend David Owens officiating. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Shawn Collins, Josh McAtee, Adam Harmon, Yance Bryant, Davis McGill, Eric Elrod, Jarred Fielden, Andrew Hambright, Chris Pruitt, and Jacob Mashburn honored to serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be The Dalton Shrine Club and Sumach Masonic Lodge #55. Military graveside honors will be provided by the Dalton American Legion Post #112.
The family will receive friends at Ponders Melrose Chapel from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Monday and after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday until the service hour.
Masonic funeral rites will be held at 4:00 P.M. Monday at Ponders Melrose Chapel and will be performed by Sumach Masonic Lodge #55.
The family extends special thanks to the many doctors, nurses and medical personnel who provided loving care. In lieu of flowers the family asked that donations be made to Ponders Melrose Chapel for final expenses.
