Obituary

On Thursday, October 5, 2023, Richard Edward Buckner, a man of simplicity and profound love, peacefully passed away at the age of 64, surrounded by the comforting embrace of his family at his home on Riverbend Rd.

Richard leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him. He is survived by his loving mother, Bobbie Jean Buckner, whose bond with her son was unbreakable. Richard's memory is cherished by his three devoted daughters: Ladonna Hamlin, April Williams, and Sarah Sandifer, his stepson Scottie Bennett, his soon to be son-in-law, Cj Johnson, his niece and nephew Katie and Tony Buckner, and his companion of nearly 30 years, Susan Bennett. Richard is also survived by his siblings: Kathy Sue Capehart, brother-in-law Raymond Capehart, and David Buckner.

Family was the cornerstone of Richard's existence, and he was immensely proud of his three adoring grandchildren: Kyrra Camper, Jonah Williams, and Jaylen Williams. Their presence in his life brought boundless joy.

A friendship that spanned a lifetime, Richard's best friend, Lloyd Harris, was a source of good times and an unwavering bond. Their friendship, which began in grade school, enriched their lives with countless shared memories and laughter.

Richard was a man who found contentment in life's simplest pleasures. Whether he was in his backyard, surrounded by his three beloved dogs, or exploring the serene beauty of John's Mountain during camping trips, he embraced the tranquility of uncomplicated joys. He required little more than a touch of sunshine, the love of his family, and a cold beer, accompanied by the timeless melodies of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

During his daughters' formative years, Richard ensured that weekends were spent at Redwine Cove, creating cherished memories that will endure through the generations. His daughters held dear their father's grateful heart, as he expressed his appreciation after each meal with the words, "Thank you for eating."

Richard was a man of few contacts, keeping only ten saved in his phone. Yet, his willingness to extend a helping hand knew no bounds. He never sought recognition but instead rushed to help anyone who needed him.

Among his favorite pastimes were his cherished van, watching the news, and experimenting with recipes he discovered on YouTube. He found solace in walks through the woods with his granddaughter, Kyrra.

Richard embarked on a 25-year career at Frigidaire, dedicating himself to the company until its closure in Dalton. Subsequently, he joined his late father, Jack Buckner, at his body shop. Richard's adventurous spirit was undeniable, as he could find joy anywhere, even camping in his van at a truck stop if campsites were full.

He lived a quiet, unassuming life and cherished moments of solitude. However, when surrounded by family, he ensured that each moment was filled with meaningful conversations, his unique "Buckner humor," and great food. Visitors would often find him in his backyard, drink in hand, tending to the fire-pit, smoking meat, or grilling.

Richard was born on March 23, 1959, and he faced his final battle with grace, succumbing to cancer. As he peacefully passed away, he transitioned to the eternal embrace of the Lord.

A private service, attended by immediate family, will be held to celebrate Richard's life. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's honor may be made to a charity of your choice. Richard's memory will forever illuminate the hearts of those who loved him. His legacy of simplicity, gratitude, and selflessness will continue to inspire us all.
