Obituary

Reverend Jerry Miller, age 93 of Summerville, Georgia, departed this life Thursday, July 24, 2025 at his residence.

Brother Jerry was born June 15, 1932, in Euharlee, Georgia, a son of the late Gordon Lee and Tinnie Leo Brock Miller.  He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey L. Van Meter Miller, a son-in-law, Reverend Jimmy Stombaugh, Sr., step-children, Danny Duvall and Teresa Redwine Pickle, sisters, Joan Stout, Pauline (Roy) Cornellis, Hulda Mae Miller, and Joan Miller, brothers, Johnny (Evelyn) Miller, Charlie Miller, Robert Miller, Edward Miller, Lester Miller, Mort Levie Miller and Gordon Miller.

Brother Jerry was a lifetime member of The Church of God of The Union Assembly. In 1947, Brother Jerry began his Christian walk in Aragon, Georgia. He and his father, Gordon Lee Miller, attended our sister churches located in Center, Alabama, and Rome, Georgia.  By 1948, he traveled from Cartersville, to attend our church in Summerville. During an Assembly meeting, he finally met Sister Audrey VanMeter and married on September 24, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan, where they attended our many churches. During the Korean War Brother Jerry proudly served as a medic in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. After the war ended, he joined his family in Harlan, Kentucky. They returned to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked in the steel mill until they moved in 1961, to Atlanta, Georgia, where God called him to be a minister. In July 1970, he was ordained as a Bishop. When the church sent him to Hamilton, Ohio, and Hickory, North Carolina, Brother Jerry answered the call with zeal.  In 1971, he served as Pastor of a mission near Jasper, Tennessee, in a store-front church, as he led old fashion Gospel tent meetings and reached-out to souls in the "mountain hollers" of Haletown.  In 1985, Brother Jerry and his wife relocated from Arlington, Texas, where her pastored a small church in Fort Worth, and moved to pastor a church in Kokomo, Indiana, until 1989. Then, he and his wife moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where they attended our sister's church on Keith Avenue. From 2007 to 2008, he answered God's call again to return to our church's origin, where he led a mission church in Kingston, Georgia, until his beloved wife, Sister Audrey, passed away on December 1, 2008. On October 31, 2011, he married his childhood friend, Sister Betty Fowler. In 2015, they moved to Summerville, and transferred their membership to join our local church family in Trion. We have been blessed to hear him preach as he continued to share God's Word.  Brother Jerry was a member of the Trion Masonic Lodge #160.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Fowler Miller of the residence; sons, Jerry Wayne (Sherry) Miller, and Roy E. Miller all of Dalton, GA; daughters, Glenna and David Farmer of Lafayette, GA, Minnie Juanita Stombaugh of Knoxville, TN; sisters-in-law, Pat Miller of Riverdale, GA, Janice Miller of Griffin, GA, Vickie Miller of Atlanta, GA, Kathy Miller of Rocky Face, GA; brother-in-law, Harold Stout of Kokomo, IN; step-daughter-in-law, Pat Duvall of North Carolina; step-son-in-law, Jonathan Pickle of Summerville, GA; twelve grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews.
