Reita Schmitt Suggs passed away on Monday, January 19, 2015 at Hamilton Medical Center. Born in Ringgold in 1922, Mrs. Suggs spent most of her adult life in Dalton. During WWII she and her husband, Evans Otis (E.O.) Suggs lived for four years in Detroit assisting with the war effort.
Locally, Mrs. Suggs was known by many as Nanny Suggs, caring for children in her home-based daycare center for over 25 years. Mrs. Suggs especially loved gardening, and tended family roses that were brought from Germany in the 1850s, among numerous other heirloom plants. She was an active member of the Dalton Seventh-Day Adventist Church for 55 years.
She is survived by five children: Faye Suggs Gannon and her husband, Pete who live in Tunnel Hill; Jan Suggs who lives in Dalton; Breit Suggs and his wife Irene, who live in Tunnel Hill; Evans Suggs and his wife Michele who live in Dalton; and Melanie Suggs and her husband Elichai Hoenig who live in Dalton; as well as one grandchild, Jason Allbright, and two great-grandchildren, Lilith and Noah Allbright.
Mrs. Suggs was the daughter of Paul Schmitt of Ringgold and Margaret Ellen Irene Chapman of Charleston, South Carolina. Three sisters, Ina Schmitt Kittle, wife of Thomas Kittle, Louise Schmitt Kittle, wife of Ted Kittle and Emma Ruth Schmitt, as well as one brother, Marion Schmitt, departed this life before Mrs. Suggs. She is survived by one brother, Donald Schmitt of Ringgold.
A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, January 24 at 4:00 p.m. at the Dalton Seventh-Day Adventist church at 300 South Tibbs Road. A visitation is planned for Friday evening at the home of Melanie Suggs and Elichai Hoenig.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Learning Tree Elementary School in Dalton.
