Mr. Melvin Eugene "Gene" Massingill Sr., age 86, of Dalton, Georgia, departed this life Sunday evening, March 14, 2021 at the home of his daughter in Kennesaw, Georgia. He was born January 29, 1935 in Dalton, Georgia, a son of the late Clarence Wiley and Ludie Mae Talley Massingill. He was also preceded in death by his wife of fifty-nine years, Zelma Sue "Tot" Massingill, who died January 25, 2016, brothers, Edgar "Ed" Massingill, Marvin Massingill and GW Massingill and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tom and Vary Redwine. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Sugar Valley, Georgia.
He is survived by his daughters and a son-in-law, Wanda Massingill Holland of Cumming, GA, Sue Ledford of Dalton and Diane & Porter Evans of Resaca; son, Melvin Eugene Massingill, Jr. of Dalton; grandchildren and spouses, Jennifer & Dale Pendergraft, Kelly & Tony Kirby, Kevin Ledford, Teresa & Jerry McClure, Melissa & Michael Majors, Brandon & Christina Grubbs, Adam Wilson & Family, and River Massingill, great-grandchildren; Payton Pendergraft Katelyn Pendergraft, Dustin and Emily Bates, Jaden Tate, Addison Tate, Haven Tate, Luke Kirby, Haley Ledford, Gage Ledford, Tyler McClure, Ashley McClure, Bryan Majors, Rebecca Majors, Michael Grubbs, Corban Grubbs and Nehemiah Grubbs, Zerahiah Grubbs and Magdalene Grubbs; great-great-grandchildren, Athens Bates and Riya King; several nieces and nephews.
Service to celebrate the life of Mr. Melvin Eugene Massingill Sr. will be held Friday, March 19, 2021 at 1:00 o'clock p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Bayview Drive in Sugar Valley, GA, with Reverend Delmar Davenport, Reverend Tom Hicks and Reverend Donnie Mattila officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife in Fairview Cemetery at Hall Memorial Church, with his family members serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be his great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Calvary Baptist Church, Bayview Drive, Sugar Valley, Georgia, after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday until the service on Friday.
Due to the national health crisis and the COVID-19 virus, masks must be worn properly at all times and social distancing must be observed when visiting the funeral home.
