Obituary

Mr. Marshall William Payne, age 91 of Dalton, Georgia, departed this life Tuesday evening, December 9, 2014 at the local hospital. He was born March 11, 1923 in Fannin County, Georgia, a son of the late, William and Armilla Martha Payne. He was also preceded by his brothers, Carmon Payne, Carl Payne, Zollie Payne and Earl Payne; sister, Verda Carr, Lena Lowery, Ellie Goss, Arlie Allen and Anglie Patterson.

Marshall as a young man joined the Civilian Conservation Corp after which he worked in the copper mines in Copperhill, Tennessee. Marshall proudly joined the U.S. Army Air Corp and served until the end of World War II.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou Welch Payne, and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, September 8, 2014; daughter, Carolyn and Mike Taylor of Cohutta, Ga; sons, Steve and Nora Payne of Chatsworth, GA, Gary & Kay Payne of Ball Ground, GA, Ronald and Kellie Payne of Chatsworth, Georgia; sister Ruby Wood of Dalton, Ga. He was able to enjoy the love of his eleven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchild and many, many nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Marshall William Payne will be held Friday December 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Liberty Baptist Church in McCaysville, Georgia, with the Rev. T. R Etheridge and Rev. Dewitt Morrison officiating. He will be laid to rest in the church cemetery with Keith Payne, Jason Payne, Kenny Harper, Jacob Payne, Dewitt Morrison, Austin Morrison and Zack Tilson serving as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Mt. Liberty Baptist Church, Mt View Rd & Mt Liberty Rd, McCaysville, GA, 30555.

The family will received friends at Ponders Melrose Chapel, Thursday December 11, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and also on Friday, at Mt Liberty Baptist Church from 12:00 p.m. noon until the service hour.
