IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jeanne Suzanne
Mooney
December 11, 1955 – December 9, 2022
Ms. Jeanne Suzanne Mooney, age 66, of Dalton, Georgia, departed this life Friday, Dec. 9, 2022 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital surrounded by loving family, friends and caregivers. "Mooney" as she was affectionately called by many, had suffered a major stroke this past summer and succumbed Friday to its debilitating effects.
Suzanne began her professional career as a nurse, but went back to school to become an educator when she realized being in a helping profession meant a calling to teach and to devote herself to helping young people. She taught in Murray County, Georgia from 1990 to 2005 and is remembered fondly for starting the "New Beginnings" program in the early 1990's to help support young teen mothers continuing their education by staying in school while balancing the responsibilities of starting a new family. This program impacted the school system and the community in a positive way and even attracted the attention of Jane Fonda's Atlanta based organization, the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (G-CAPP). Mooney left Murray County and began teaching at the Whitfield Career Academy in 2005. She was able to continue her passion for teaching students interested in becoming teachers, by teaching the state's program for Early Childhood Education. She also taught education courses to non-English speaking students at Georgia Northwestern Technical College until her retirement. Suzanne loved the students she taught and was a loving and devoted friend to many. She attended Crosspointe Church and enjoyed her daily bible study and devotion. Our hearts are heavy but we know Heaven gained a precious soul.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie Boyd Jr. and Dorothy Jean Mooney and her brother Michael Mooney. She is survived by her brother and sisters-in-law, Emery and Maribeth Balthrop and Katie Mooney of Lookout Mountain, Tn. Nieces and nephews, DeAnn Balthrop and Chris Balthrop, Emma Kate Mooney and Davis Mooney. Great niece and nephews Sileas Balthrop, Quin Balthrop, Connor Balthrop, Winston Mooney and William Mooney. "Mooney" is also survived by a special Goddaughter, Yasmine Huggins as well as a host of devoted friends.
Memorial service will be held Thursday December 15, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. from the Ponders Melrose Chapel with Pastor Davis Mooney officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
