Obituary

Jeanette Estelle Jones, born 15 Feb 1919 in the Piney Grove Community of Houston Co., AL, passed away Friday afternoon, 12 Aug 2016, at Tranquility Assisted Living in Dalton, GA. Her father, William Henry King died of influenza in 1920, the year after Jeanette was born, leaving her mother Ruth Viola Napier King with a son, Ernest, and daughters Winifred and Jeanette King, all under the age of five. Ruth moved to Columbus, GA, to be near relatives and to work in the textile mills. She raised her children there during the depression years of the 1930s. Jeanette left high school at the age of seventeen to marry Uris Jarvis, but they were soon divorced and Jeanette and her best friend Frankie decided to seek their fortunes in California in 1945. Jeanette married John Leroy Jones on 20 Jun 1948, after his return home from the Navy. After many years working in the upscale restaurants in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, they opened a cocktail lounge named "Leroy's" next door to the Beverly Wilshire Theater in Hollywood. They were an instant success and were well known as a friendly neighborhood gathering place, until they retired and sold the business in the early 1980s. With no children, they always had one or two cats to keep them company. Leroy died in 1985, and Jeanette remained in southern CA until 2012, when failing health made it necessary for her to move near relatives in Dalton. When Tranquility Assisted Living opened the following summer, she was among the first group of residents, and was known as, "Miss Hollywood." She loved to dance at the Christmas parties and have her picture made in fancy hats as each holiday rolled around. No services will be held here. She will be returned to CA to rest beside her beloved husband Leroy in the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside Co., CA. Aunt Jeanette's family wishes to thank the staff of Ross Woods Daycare, Tranquility Assisted Living, and Avalon Hospice for their excellent service and support while she was in their care.
