Obituary

James Wayne Kirk Obituary: Jim was born on August 14, 1950 and grew up in the Stevenson and Bridgeport communities of Northeast Alabama. For a time as a child he lived with his family in Winchester, Tennessee. He was the son of Fred and Irene Kirk.

Jim passed away on June 27th at Advent Redmond Hospital in Rome after complications from a fall earlier in the month at his residence in Calhoun. He is survived by his spouse of seven years and his companion of over twenty-seven years of the same residence in Calhoun, Jeffery Adair. Jeff was with him at his time of death. He is also survived by his sister Josephine Seward of Stevenson, Alabama along with several nieces and nephews that he remained close to.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Irene Kirk, his sisters Sue Scarbel and Ann Crawford, and his brothers Tom Kirk and Donnie Kirk.

He attended school in Stevenson, Alabama and graduated High School there in 1969 where he played and lettered in Basketball, Football, and Baseball. He was elected as the Homecoming King in 1968 and had the honor of escorting that years Homecoming Queen. After high school he traveled the world and settled in Cali, Columbia where he worked playing golf and gave tennis lessons at a local resort. After returning to the states he briefly lived in Washington D.C. before returning to Alabama where he worked for the North Alabama Electric Co-Op. In 1973 he moved to Dalton, Georgia where he attended Dalton Community College and worked for Shaw Industries. Jim moved to his current residence in Calhoun, Georgia in the fall of 2004. Jim retired from Shaw Industries in 2014 after forty-one years where he mainly worked in Shaw promotional goods and commercial carpet sales department.

Jim enjoyed camping and canoeing, gardening, writing, and live theatre. Over the years Jim served as an active member and as an officer on the board of Dalton Little Theatre where he often directed and acted in numerous productions. He was first to direct on the DLT stage shows like Evita, Steel Magnolias, The Trip to Bountiful, and Always Patsy Cline which he staged both at DLT and later at the restored Wink Theater. He later served on the board of the GEM Theater in Calhoun and Calhoun Little Theatre where he also directed and acted in several productions. For six years he served as a Trustee for Dalton Little Theatre. Jim was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Calhoun.

In his later years he enjoyed playing golf, reading, music, watching movies, baking hummingbird cakes and making his homemade salsa and vegetable soup that he would share with various friends and fellow church members. He loved his Cocker Spaniel puppies Lacy, Lilly, Lila, and Latte that he and Jeff raised together from puppies in their home. Jim had so many friends and was loved by many people. He will be greatly missed.

The Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Jim Kirk will be held at the Harris Arts Center,

212 South Wall Street, Calhoun, Georgia, on Saturday, July 20 at 2:00.
