Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Johnson, age 90 of Dalton, Georgia, departed this life, Saturday February 1, 2020 at Hospice of Chattanooga. Helen was born April 30, 1929 in Pine Chapel in Gordon County. She was daughter of the late James Harvey and Lizzie Emilyline Mealer Bennett. She was also preceded in death by her husband of seventy-two years, Luther Paul Johnson; brothers, Doug (Liz) Bennett, James Bennett; sisters, Mildred Bennett, Johnnie Chitwood, Bonnie (Leon) Adams; Glenda Bagley.
Helen was an active member of Temple Baptist Church. She lived her faith through her witnessing and generosity. Helen had many hobbies that kept her busy, she loved to garden and could tell you the name of each flower and its Latin name. Her knowledge of flowers came from her love of reading, she was always reading and her favorite author was Mary Higgins Clark. After her and Paul retired from Texture-Tex they loved to travel and see the country. When she had free time she loved to quilt and sew.She loved her family and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their sporting events.
Helen is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Sheila and Daryl Keeter of Chatsworth, GA, and Janis Leigh Keener of Dalton, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Neal and Michelle "Dee" Johnson of Jacksonville, FL; sister Joyce (Dick) Baldridge of Dalton, GA; brother, David (Shirley) Bennett of Dawsonville, GA; brother-in-law, Bobby Bagley of Cohutta, GA; grandchildren, Michelle Dawn and Eric Barr, Shawn and Cathy Keeter, Erin Watson, Tom Keener, and Tiffany Cochran; great-grandchildren, Victoria Barr, Bronson Barr, Isaac Watson, Eion Keener, Jennifer and Josh Meeks, Mallory Cochran, Ethan and Claudia Cochran, Payton Cochran, Peter Cochran, Madison Cochran and Caleb Cochran; great-great-grandchildren, Wyatt Roberts, Emma Crawford and twins, Eloise and Oliver Meeks: special friends, Don and Susan Pelfrey; several nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Johnson will be held Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Temple Baptist Church with Reverend Brett Yaeger officiating. She will be laid to rest at Ponders Whitfield Memorial Gardens with her grandsons, great-grandsons and Don Pelfrey serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at Ponders Melrose Chapel Monday February 3, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday and after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Temple Baptist Church until the service hour at 11:00 a.m.
Flowers will be accepted or donations made be made to Temple Baptist Church or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
