Obituary

Mrs. Hazel Virgie Mullinax, age 94 of Dalton, Georgia, departed this life Monday, January 12, 2026, at The Oaks Assisted Living surrounded by her loving family.

Virgie was born in Shelbyville, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Samuel R. and Mary Hazelwood Seay, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty-six years, Grady Mullinax, Jr.; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Jenny Mullinax; son-in-law, Mark Johnston; sister and brother-in-law, Brownie and Achie Mitchell; brothers, Gordon Seay and Samuel Seay, Jr.; sister-in-law, Jean Mullinax Jordan; and a niece, Sharon Lumpkin.

Virgie's life was a beautiful reflection of love, faith, and devotion. She was a constant source of support and strength to her family, and nothing brought her greater joy than being surrounded by those she loved. Her home and heart were always open, and she never hesitated to encourage and care for others.

Virgie was especially close to her sister, Brownie, and their bond was truly unbreakable. Together, they owned and operated a furniture store known as "The Store," where they not only served the community through their work, but also through their compassion and Christian witness. Virgie ministered to many people through the relationships she formed there, always eager to share the love of her Savior, Jesus Christ.

Virgie was a devoted member of McFarland Hill Baptist Church, and since the passing of her sister, she held the distinction of being the oldest charter member. She also shared a lifelong passion for gospel music and was an original member of the McFarland Hill Quartet, founded in 1940 alongside her sister Brownie, Jack Dixon, and Billy Dixon. Her voice and testimony touched countless lives through song.

Virgie had an extraordinary love for music and especially cherished playing the piano. She continued doing what she loved until just last week, filling her days with melodies that praised the Lord and comforted those around her.

Though Virgie lived a life full of faith and gratitude, her heart carried a deep sorrow after the passing of her sister Brownie on August 27, 2024. She never stopped grieving her, and those who knew her best could see the love and longing she carried every day. In her final moments, the last word she spoke was "Brownie," a tender reminder of a bond that even death could not break.

Virgie leaves behind a family who will forever cherish her memory and the legacy she built through faith and love. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Bill Worley; grandchildren, Tasha and Colter Bradford, Brice and Breanna Johnston, Nigel Mullinax, Chase and Courtney Worley; great-grandchildren, Grady Bradford, River Johnston, Gus Worley, and Addie Worley; nephews and nieces, Terry and Sandy Mitchell, Lexie Mitchell and Tinker, Rebecca Sane, and Patricia Rymer; and many special friends and caregivers including Ashley and Blake of Hearth Hospice, the staff and residents of The Oaks, Patricia Elrod Cole, her piano-playing friend Mary Robinson, and her physical therapists, Matt and Kelli.

The family will receive friends at Ponders Melrose Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday.

Arrangements are entrusted to Ponders Melrose Chapel, 138 Melrose Drive, Dalton, Georgia 30721. For more information, please visit www.selectedindependentfuneralhomes.org.
