Mr. George Benjamin Gazaway, Sr., age 86, of Dalton, Georgia, departed this life Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the local hospital. George was born June 9, 1930 in Dalton, Georgia, a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Edna Mae Roach Gazaway. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty three years, Vernie Mae Stinson Gazaway, brothers, Billy Gazaway and Willard Grover Gazaway. George was the oldest of thirteen children and went to work early to help his family. He was an example of a true Christian and attended several area churches, loved playing the guitar and ministering to people thru his music. He was a true country boy at heart and loved pinto beans and cornbread. His life centered around his family, and was "Paw" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sherell and Kevin Stack; son and daughter-in-law, George and Jeleta Gazaway, Jr.; grandchildren, Michael and Wendy Gazaway, Jeff and Nicole Gazaway, Chris and Mandy Gazaway, Shawn and Tonya Masters, Shane and Gina Masters, Wesley Coker, Zach and Megan Gazaway, Cody Coker and Cassie Stack; ten great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred Gembler of Orlando, FL, Hazel Pangle of Rocky Face, Shirley and Jesse Silvers, Jewel and Charles Pilcher all of Dalton, GA, Linda and Marvin Howell of Cohutta, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Waymon and Eva Gazaway, Harold and Mary Lee Gazaway, Larry and Sandra Gazaway, Joan Gazaway all o Dalton, GA, Doyle and Kay Gazaway and Craig Gazaway all of Cohutta, GA; several nieces and nephews.

Service to celebrate the life of Mr. George Gazaway, Sr., will be held Saturday March 11, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. from the Ponders Melrose Chapel with Reverend Larry Woodson, Reverend Tony Robertson and Reverend Charles Carnes officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife at the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with Dustin Dillingham, Chris Cooper, Gunnard Stafford, Eddie Gazaway, Gerald Gazaway, Brandon Gazaway, Bruce Gazaway and Randy Gazaway serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. on Friday evening.
