IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George
Cross
May 11, 1947 – August 2, 2020
The many that has had the privilege to meet or know George Cross know what a kindhearted soul he was. He was always thinking of others and greeted everyone with a huge smile and a hug. George was also known as the "quarter man" giving away quarters from his own pockets daily to any child he encountered. Those children grew into teens, then adults, never forgetting how a few quarters meant so much to them. In honor of George's memory, there will be a jar for anyone who would like to drop in a few quarters. George was very active with the Whitfield County Jail Ministry where all the proceeds will be donated.
Mr. George Roy Cross, 73, of Chatsworth, Georgia, departed this life Sunday August 2, 2020 at his residence. He was born May 11, 1947 in Dalton, GA, a son of the late Hubert and Vietta Hefner Cross. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Alberta Jackson, brothers, Charles Cross and Danny Cross. He was a Deacon and Treasurer at the Eleventh Avenue Baptist Church where he had been a member along with his wife for over fifty years, joining when he was only a teenager. He was a local longtime businessman who was associated with the textile industry. George had the biggest heart and loved to help people. He displayed this love by ministering to families at Ponders Funeral Homes where he had been employed over the last fifteen years. He served many families at Ponders Funeral Home who did not have access to a minister for their loved ones services. George was always the first one to work at the funeral home, and usually the last one to leave every day. His number one goal was to ease the pain associated with the loss of a loved one for the families he served at work. His life centered on his Lord and Savior, his family, his church, and the funeral home. He was very active with the Whitfield County Jail Ministry where he tried to serve on a weekly basis. He often visited jails in all surrounding counties when he was able. George was affectionately known as "The Quarter Man", especially by small children. He would often give quarters out to kids as he greeted them.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Kendrick Cross, who he always referred to as the love of his life, of the residence, daughter, Malea Sutton of Dalton, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Jessica Cross of Chatsworth, GA; grandchildren, Tayla Sutton McKinney, Alex Sutton, Gavin R. Cross; brother, Donnie Cross of Chatsworth, GA.
Service to celebrate the life of Mr. George Roy Cross will be held Saturday August 8, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Eleventh Avenue Baptist Church with Reverend Ronald Guffey and Reverend Bruce Beach officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Friday. He will be laid to rest at the Ponders Whitfield Memorial Gardens. The staff of Ponders Funeral Home will be honored to serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Eleventh Avenue Baptist Church. Anyone attending the services for George is asked to bring a quarter, a handful of quarters, or a roll of quarters as a token of your love for George. Those quarters will be collected by Ponders Funeral Home and they will be donated in memory of George to a local Jail ministry in his memory, as this was a ministry very dear to his heart.
