Obituary

Mr. E. Monroe "Money" Harrell , age 83, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2016.

Money was born November 4, 1933 in Jacksonville, Florida. His 14 month older brother, Hardy M. Harrell, Jr., could not pronounce Monroe and it sounded like "Money". It had nothing to do with his financial status as a little boy, and became his nickname for life.

Money and Hardy were very close and grew up on the Cedar River in Jacksonville. They both loved boating and Money was an excellent water skier. He met his wife, Jane Graddy, on a blind date for a boat ride. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary April 7, 2016.

He loved sports, especially football and track and field, which he participated in at Robert E. Lee High School and Jacksonville University. He was a big fan of the Florida Gator football program.

Knowing his draft number was getting close and as a Navy reservist, he decided to join the Navy. He served two years on the USS Coral Sea aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean during the Korean War.

He was a devoted husband and father. The biggest compliment he could give another man was to say "He's a good family man." He loved his two daughters, Kelly Harrell and Tracey Burke and son-in-law, Tim Burke.

He was a master woodcrafter and donated many of his handmade items to charity. A particular wooden object was his wooden trays that he designed.

Money retired November 14, 2014, after working in the commercial line of insurance for 57 years. His career took him and his family from Jacksonville to West Point, Mississippi, Clarkston, Georgia, Cartersville, Georgia, and finally in 1971, to Dalton, Georgia.

The family will receive visitors at St. Mark's Episcopal Church (901 West Emery St.) from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Friday, November 18, 2016, prior to the memorial service at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Beth Royalty presiding.

In lieu of flowers, Money requests that donations be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 901 West Emery Street, Dalton, Georgia, 30720 or to the Northwest Georgia Human Society, Post Office Box 3946, Dalton, Georgia, 30719. Please Designate "Building Fund".
