Mr. Donald Spencer "Don" Sharp, age 67, of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, April 30, 2014 at the Hutcheson Medical Center in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, surrounded by his loving family. Don was born April 20, 1947 in South Boston, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Sharp and a brother, Jimmy Sharp, and grandparents, Robert B. Sharp and Evelyn Sharp, Spencer Allen and Moselle Allen. Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action while serving in Vietnam November 14, 1967. He entered the Army in March 1967 and completed basic training at Ft. Benning, before his tour of duty in Vietnam. He graduated in 1966 from Westside High School and attended McKenzie College in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church in Pisgah, Alabama, and was on the board of Trustees of Talking Rock Chapel where he was a faithful usher for four years.
He is survived by his mother and step-father, Frances and Winford Dixon of Rising Fawn, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Doug Emmer of Tunnel Hill, GA; sons, Robert Sharp of Tunnel Hill, GA, and Ray Sharp of Athens, TN; brother, Bobby Sharp of Dalton, GA; mother of his children, Carol Susan Sharp of Tunnel Hill, step sister, Phyllis Cantrell of Dalton, GA; grandchildren, D.J., Ryan, Zack Emmer; special friends, Hannah and H.A. Gant of Pisgah, AL; several nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Donald Spencer "Don" Sharp will be held Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Ponders Melrose Chapel with Dr. Terry Gant and Reverend Derrick Hills officiating. He will be laid to rest at Colonial Hills Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors. Stacy Hewitt, Ryan Emmer, Will Bickel, David Bagley, Dr. Bill Newton and Wayne Kirby serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Sharp, Dr. Terry Gant, Reverend Chris McDaniel and Reverend Donald Broadhurst. Military graveside honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #112.
The family will receive friends at Ponders Melrose Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday after 12:00 p.m. noon until the service hour.
