Carol Ann Black, distinguished veteran of the US Army, veterinarian, and dog breeder of merit, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2023, at the age of 70 in Augusta, Georgia. She was born on December 1, 1952, in Harvey, Illinois to Paul W. and Helen M. Black.

Carol joined the US Army in 1971, rising to the rank of major. After retiring in 1991, Carol attended Auburn University and earned a degree in veterinary medicine. She moved to Sugar Valley GA and lived a secluded but active life breeding and showing Gordon setter dogs, as well as maintaining a successful veterinary practice. She was named a breeder of merit by the American Kennel Club.

Carol is survived by her siblings, Alice M. Sundquist of Fair Oaks, CA, Russell W. Black of Pompano Beach, FL, Robert C. Black of Kenmore, NY, Douglas E. Black of New Concord, OH, Kathy E. Montrose of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Gary M. Black of Fairhope, Alabama, and Donna S. Harned of Oral, SD.

In recognition of her contributions to both her country and the animal kingdom, a memorial service will be held Friday morning, October, 20, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. from the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia, with her friend, Reverend Luke Morgan officiating.  Military graveside honors will be provided by the Dalton American Legion Post#112.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Carol's memory to a local animal shelter, the AKC's Canine Health Foundation, or a charity of your choice, as a tribute to her lifelong dedication to the well-being of animals.
