Obituary

Mrs. Callie Shelton Slaughter, age 89, of Dalton, Georgia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Wednesday evening, January 22, 2014 at the local hospital surrounded by her loving family. Callie was born March 18, 1924 in Murray County, Georgia, a daughter of the late William Robert and Dannie Mae Springfield Meeks. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Slaughter, the father of her children, of whom she was the love of his life, Joseph Charlie "Joe" Shelton, a son, Harlan Shelton, a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Saul Rittenhouse,daughter, Catherine Bonnie Sanders, sisters, Nellie Brock, Cordie Stafford and her brothers, Carl, Columbus and Clifford Meeks.

Callie was retired from Shaw Industries and was a member of Eleventh Avenue Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Faye Shelton, Charles and Edna Shelton, Larry Shelton; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Marion Smith, Mary and Homer Watson, Betsy Shelton; sister, Annie Rich; twenty-eight grandchildren, fifty-two great-grandchildren, eighteen great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; special friend and roommate, Ms. Nellie Dockery. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and caregivers at Ridgewood Health Care for their great care and love. Also a very special thanks to, Robert Beavers and Eric Jenkins who have been with us the past several days, for their devotion and support during this very difficult time.

Services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Callie K. Slaughter will be held, Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Eleventh Avenue Baptist Church with Reverend Eric Jenkins, Reverend Robert Beavers and Reverend Ronald Guffey officiating. She will be laid to rest at West Hill Cemetery with the associates of Tufting Parts Unlimited, Phillip Bailer, Jason McCall, Thomas Ledford, Tom Pierce, Paul Patterson, Reece Banks, David Scoggins, Jr., David Scoggins, Sr., Dareth Broome, Matt Bevil, Joel Godfrey, Eddie Brewer and Kenneth Watson serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at Ponders Melrose Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday and after 10:00 a.m. Saturday until the service hour.
